The American ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Kraft, sent a letter to the world organization in which she offers an explanation for the action carried out last Sunday, in which the Iranian general Qassem Soleimani was killed.
"The killing of Soleimani was in self-defense, and America is ready to take additional similar actions to protect our personnel and interests in the Middle East. We are also ready to begin serious negotiations with Iran without preconditions, with the aim of preventing further threats to peace and stability in the world," Kraft said in the letter, reports Reuters.
According to her, the killing of Soleimani is justified by Article 51 of the UN Charter, which requires countries to immediately submit a report to the UN Security Council on all measures taken to exercise the right to self-defense.
She also added that the death of Suleimani and the airstrikes on Iraq and Syria were a response to the escalation of a series of armed attacks in the previous months in the Middle East, reports Tanjug.
"The goal was to deter Iran from conducting or supporting attacks, and to degrade its ability to carry out attacks," Kraft wrote.
