Tomorrow, the House of Representatives of the US Congress will vote on forwarding the indictment against President Donald Trump to the Senate, which opens the way for his impeachment trial, said the Speaker of that House, Democrat Nancy Pelosi.
"The House of Representatives will move to a vote on Wednesday, January 15, to forward the charges" passed in December against the Republican president - abuse of power and obstruction of Congress - to a team of lawmakers who will take the impeachment to the Senate, Pelosi said in a statement after a closed-door meeting. with his parliamentary group.
She said the House of Representatives will vote to transfer the charges and appoint people to be in charge of the case. She warned the Senate, where Republicans have a majority, not to think that they can just drop the charges, but that it is necessary to carry out the process.
"The president and senators will be held accountable. The American people deserve the truth, and the Constitution demands a trial," she wrote in a statement.
This action initiates the impeachment procedure in the Senate, which will be only the third impeachment trial in American history.
The House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump last month on abuse of power charges for pressuring Ukraine to investigate his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, and obstruction of Congress in the ensuing investigation.
When the charges reach the Senate, the trial is expected to begin within a few days.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell took a wry look at Nancy Pelosi waiting so long to forward the allegations and said the Senate would finish the story "seriously and soberly."
