Democrats from the House of Representatives of the US Congress presented today their team that will lead the trial of US President Donald Trump in the Senate, headed by the chairman of the Intelligence Committee.
As reported by Radio Free Europe (RSE), Schiff will lead a team of seven "managers" of the Lower House who will present to senators the case from two indictments according to which Trump should be impeached - that is, for abuse of power due to pressure on Ukraine to investigate his political rival. Joe Biden and because of the obstruction of Congress.
The chairman of the Intelligence Committee also led the impeachment investigation in the House of Representatives and is a frequent target of Trump's attacks, RSE reports. Judiciary Committee Chairman Jarrod Nedler will also be part of the Democratic team.
After several weeks of delay, it is expected that the House of Representatives, namely its Speaker Nancy Pelosi, will send the indictments against the US President to the Senate, which opens the way for the trial to begin next week.
The Republican-controlled Senate is expected to acquit Trump, as none of the 53 Republicans in the Senate have expressed support for his impeachment. A two-thirds majority in the Senate, which has one hundred members, should vote for Trump's dismissal.
In the impeachment trial of the president, senators serve on a jury overseen by the leader of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Roberts. It is expected that Republicans and Democrats will most likely clash over the issue of calling new witnesses.
The road to impeachment began because of a July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The conversation between the two leaders took place after Trump ordered the freezing of almost four hundred million dollars in US aid to Ukraine. During the conversation, Trump pressed Zelensky to launch an investigation into his political rival, the leading potential Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden, and his son Hunter, who served on the board of a Ukrainian energy company.
Information about the phone call became public after an unnamed whistleblower's report alleging that US President Donald Trump used his position to seek foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election.
