US President Donald Trump appointed Republican congressman John Ratcliffe to head the US security services, more than six months after he gave up the appointment due to criticism of Ratcliffe's inexperience.
"John is an extraordinary and very talented man," Trump tweeted about the Texas congressman, who is among his biggest supporters.
At the beginning of August, Trump announced his intention to appoint Ratcliffe as director of national security services (DNI).
The holder of that position supervises and coordinates the activities of the CIA, the National Security Agency (NSA) and 15 other agencies.
Democrats then harshly criticized Ratcliffe for his inexperience and loyalty to the president.
In his previous career, Ratcliffe was the mayor of a suburb of Dallas and a federal prosecutor for a period of one year.
The Republican president then abandoned his intention and condemned the "unfair treatment" of Ratcliffe in the media.
The nomination still needs to be confirmed by the Senate, but Republicans have the majority there.
