A strong earthquake of magnitude 7,2 hit Mexico on Friday evening, but there were no casualties and no major material damage was caused, the Mexican authorities announced.
The US and Mexican Geological Surveys registered an earthquake in the south of Mexico at 17.39:37 local time. The earthquake occurred at a depth of XNUMX kilometers.
According to photos posted on social media, several houses were damaged in the Oaxaca area, about 600 kilometers from the capital. Several thousand people spent the night outside their homes in fear of another earthquake.
The earthquake occurred five months after two strong earthquakes. The first, with a magnitude of 8,2, occurred on September 7 and killed 96 people. The second earthquake, which occurred a few days later, on September 19, had a magnitude of 7,1. 369 people died in that earthquake.
Mexico is located at the junction of five tectonic plates, and because of this, the country is often hit by strong earthquakes.
