US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said today in Beirut that the US supports a "free and democratic" Lebanon.
"The US supports the Lebanese people, and a free and democratic Lebanon," said Tillerson, who is in Beirut as part of a tour of the Middle East and amid tensions between Lebanon and Israel over the radical group Hezbollah, which is an ally of Iran and designated a terrorist organization in the US.
Today, Tillerson met with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, whose party is linked to Hezbollah, and later a meeting with Prime Minister Saad Hariri is scheduled.
The American minister said yesterday in Amman that Hezbollah is under the influence of Iran and that this could be harmful for the future of Lebanon.
