New Zealand's health minister resigned

New Zealand's Health Minister David Clark has resigned after a series of personal failings during the coronavirus pandemic.

Clark previously described himself as an "idiot" for violating quarantine measures, then last Sunday blamed Health Director General Ashley Bloomfield for the lapses at the border, sparking public outrage, the AP reports.

However, when submitting his resignation, he said that he had invested all his energy in the job, but also that he intended to remain in parliament as a lower-ranking member of parliament.

Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern said that she is ready to accept his resignation, reports RTS.

"It is essential that our health leadership has the confidence of the New Zealand public," Ardern said in a statement, adding that she had appointed Education Minister Chris Hipkins as interim health minister.
