The European Union (EU) strongly condemns the poisoning of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the European head of diplomacy Josep Borelj said today, stating that Navalny's case must not remain unsolved.
Borelj stated in a written statement that the toxicological analysis, conducted by a specialized laboratory of the German armed forces, proves that Navalny was poisoned by the military chemical nerve agent of the "Novichok" group, which was developed by the Soviet Union and later by Russia.
"The use of chemical weapons in any circumstances is completely unacceptable and represents a violation of international law," stressed Borelj.
He called on the Russian government to thoroughly and transparently investigate the attempt to assassinate Navalny, reports Tanjug.
"Navaljny's case must not remain unsolved. Those responsible must be brought to justice," said Borelj.
He stated that the EU will closely monitor the issue and discuss its implications.
Borelj wished Navalj a speedy and complete recovery.
