New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said today that New Zealanders have once again defeated the coronavirus and announced the lifting of restrictions.
The first wave of the coronavirus was almost completely suppressed at the end of May thanks to strict measures.
New Zealand then recorded 102 days without a new case of infection.
A new hotspot was registered in Auckland in August, when the authorities ordered new quarantine measures for about one and a half million residents.
No new cases of infection have been reported in Auckland in the last 12 days.
"The people of Auckland and New Zealanders stuck to a plan that has yielded results twice so far. And they defeated the virus again," said the Prime Minister.
She added that the first level of health alert will be in effect in Auckland from Wednesday evening, as well as in the rest of the country.
This means there will no longer be restrictions on public gatherings in New Zealand.
