An earthquake measuring 7,1 on the Richter scale hit the area off the coast of Peru. Tsunami warning issued, then withdrawn. Two people died, AFP reports, and Tanjug reports.
AFP points out that 56 people were injured in the earthquake, while officials point out that 17 people are missing.
Arequipa regional governor Jamila Osorio announced on Twitter that a 55-year-old man was killed when a rock fell on him in the Jauka area. Another victim died in the same region, Hernando Tavera, director of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, told TV Peru.
The Peruvian Institute of Civil Defense announced on Twitter that 65 people were injured, Reuters reports, while the Minister of Health stated that 17 people were missing after the mine collapsed.
"Several houses have collapsed and it is possible that the number of victims and injured will increase," said Jorge Chaves, director of the Peruvian Institute of Civil Damage.
The US Geological Survey states that the earthquake occurred 124 kilometers southwest of the city of Pukuyo, reports Reuters, while AP adds that the earthquake was recorded at a depth of 12,5 kilometers.
The Geophysical Institute of the Peruvian government announced that the epicenter of the 6,7 magnitude earthquake was in the Ljomas area, where people were evacuated and some roads were destroyed.
AP also states that a tsunami alert was issued for parts of Peru, as well as neighboring Chile, which has since been lifted.
