Ecuador has granted citizenship to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been living in asylum at the country's embassy in London for five years.
Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that officials have decided to grant Assange citizenship until a way is found to resolve his situation, according to the AP agency.
In 2012, Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London and refused to go to Sweden for questioning in the rape investigation because he believed Sweden would extradite him to the US for releasing secret military documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ecuador granted political asylum to the WikiLeaks founder.
The British Foreign Office rejected Ecuador's request to grant Assange, who was born in Australia, diplomatic status.
