Immunologist Anthony Fauci, who until recently advised US President Donald Trump, criticized the Trump government's strategy in combating the coronavirus epidemic today, but the White House immediately reacted by accusing the expert of deliberately wanting to weaken the president a few days before the election.
Fauci, a long-respected adviser on the coronavirus in the White House, criticized the American authorities in an interview with the Washington Post that "they could have reacted worse" to the resurgence in the number of infected people.
"The situation is not good. We will suffer," Fauci said and added that Trump is no longer asking him for advice, but is turning to expert Scott Atlas, who is advocating for the reopening of American society, and not for strengthening prevention measures.
"All of a sudden, they don't want to hear my messages, because they don't match what they want to do," Fauci said, adding that he hasn't spoken to Trump in weeks.
The immunologist made a clear difference between Trump and the Democratic presidential candidate Joseph Biden, stating that Biden "seriously understood" the coronavirus pandemic.
The communications service of the White House reacted immediately and assessed that Fauci's statement was "unacceptable" and added that the immunologist "started to engage in politics" three days before the election.
More than 94.000 people infected with the coronavirus were registered in the US on Friday, of which almost 1.000 died in one day.
In mid-October, Trump said that Fauci was a "disaster" and included him in a group of scientists who advocate a cautious approach to the coronavirus, and called those doctors "idiots".
