US President Donald Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, has tested positive for the coronavirus, two senior administration officials confirmed yesterday.
One official said several other employees had tested positive for the virus, which has killed more than 236.000 Americans this year.
No details have been released about how Meadows became infected, or his current condition.
Meadows, Trump's top adviser and former North Carolina lawmaker, regularly accompanied the US president to all campaign rallies, and last appeared in public early Wednesday morning without a mask when Trump falsely declared victory in the vote count.
The US president spent three nights in the hospital last month, during a crucial period of his re-election campaign.
Trump has repeatedly said the nation is "turning a corner" on the pandemic, which was the top issue for voters in Tuesday's election.
The number of COVID-19 cases in the US has increased by more than 50 percent in the last two weeks.
The seven-day average of new daily cases rose from 61.166 on Oct. 22 to 94.625 on Nov. 5, according to an analysis by The Associated Press and data from Johns Hopkins University.
The United States recorded more than 100.000 cases of coronavirus for the third day in a row, and more than ten million people were infected in total.
