Zambia's government has delayed the opening of schools and banned public gatherings across the country today in an attempt to stop a serious cholera outbreak that has killed 61 people, Lusaka said. Cholera appeared at the end of September in a district of the capital and has since spread rapidly. The authorities postponed the resumption of the school year, banned public gatherings and imposed a curfew in threatened areas. The army has been ordered to patrol the streets of Lusaka and ban the street sale of various goods due to the danger of non-compliance with hygiene conditions. "In the last 24 hours, 114 new cases of infection were registered. 2.670 people were infected, 61 of whom died," announced the Ministry of Health. Cholera is a highly contagious disease that can kill you in a few hours if you don't get medical help. It usually occurs in an environment where hygienic conditions are poor. In 2016, the disease affected 38 countries around the world where almost 100.000 people died. Cholera epidemics have regularly hit the capital of Zambia in recent years.
