The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning about the possibility of a protest by armed participants in Washington in the days leading up to the inauguration of President-elect Joseph Biden on January 20, Voice of America reports.
The warning applies to cities in all 50 states across America, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed source from the federal law enforcement agency.
At the same time, after the violence that happened last Wednesday in the Capitol Hill complex, when it was under siege by some of the supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump, the National Guard will send 15.000 members to the capital, Washington.
Also, according to VOA, tourist tours will be prohibited in the area of the George Washington monument - one of the symbols of the city.
The same source, who insisted on anonymity, said that the FBI warning refers to the period from January 16 to 20 for the capitals of American states and at least three more days after the inauguration in Washington.
National Guard Bureau Chief Daniel Hokanson said he expects 10.000 members of that formation to be in Washington by Saturday.
They will be engaged in the areas of security, logistics and communications.
He said that their number could be increased to 15.000.
Sen. Chris Murphy, who addressed the acting defense secretary on Monday, said it was unclear whether the National Guard would be enough to provide protection or whether active duty troops would be needed. The Secret Service will begin preparations for the event on Wednesday, almost a week earlier than expected.
