Earthquake in Indonesia, at least 42 dead

At least 42 people died today in a strong earthquake in Indonesia, the local emergency services said.

More than 600 people were injured in the 6,2 magnitude earthquake that hit the island of Sulawesi. About 15.000 people were evacuated to temporary shelters.

Rescuers are on the ground looking for survivors buried in the rubble.

Several buildings have collapsed, including a hospital, and many neighborhoods are without electricity.

An Indonesian emergency services official said the city of Mamuju was the worst affected.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 36 kilometers south of that city, at a depth of about 18 kilometers, according to the American Institute of Geophysics.
