The Semeru volcano on the Indonesian island of Java erupted today and spewed smoke and ash to a height of 5,6 kilometers into the atmosphere, according to a report by the Geology Agency under the Ministry of Energy.
The eruption of the volcano began at 17 p.m. local time, and videos posted on social networks show clouds of gray ash circling above houses, Reuters reports.
Recently, other volcanoes, such as Merapi in Java and Sinabung in Sumatra, have shown signs of increased geological activity.
There are about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, more than any other country in the world.
