Three new US senators were sworn in shortly after the inauguration of President Joseph Biden, which officially secured the control of the upper house of the US Congress by the Democratic Party.
In addition to the functions of president and vice president of the state, the Democrats will control the House of Representatives and the Senate in the next two years, which will enable Biden to implement an ambitious plan in the face of major challenges, according to the Associated Press.
A few hours after the new US Vice President Kamala Harris took the oath of office, three new senators from the Democratic Party, John Ossoff, Rafael Warnock and Alex Padilla, did the same in front of her, as she is the chairperson of the Senate.
The ratio of Democrats to Republicans in the Senate is 50 to 50, but in that case the vote of the Speaker, who is Kamala Harris, is decisive.
Ossof (33), the youngest senator in the current term, once an investigative journalist, said that "America is turning over a new leaf today."
"We will turn over a new leaf after four years, we will unite the country again, defeat the coronavirus pandemic, urgently provide economic assistance to the people," said Osof.
Ossoff and Warnock, a black Baptist minister, became Georgia senators after defeating Republican candidates in the January 5 runoff.
Their victories are somewhat of a surprise since Georgia has not elected a Democratic senator in 20 years.
Padilla was appointed to the Senate by the Governor of California to fill the vacant seat of Kamala Harris.
Every two years, Americans elect all 435 members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators, whose mandate lasts six years.
Today, for the first time in the last 10 years, the Democratic Party will gain control over both the White House and both houses of the US Congress, at a time when Biden is facing the challenge of the coronavirus pandemic and its economic consequences, as well as painful political divisions, intensified after the intrusion of supporters of the previous of President Donald Trump to the Parliament on January 6.
The pandemic has claimed more than 400.000 lives in the US, and Biden is proposing a $1.900 trillion recovery package to distribute coronavirus vaccines and rebuild the economy.
