Tonight, the House of Representatives of the US Congress adopted a bill on 1.900 billion dollars in aid to rehabilitate the consequences of the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The passage of the bill represents a victory for US President Joseph Biden and his Democratic Party, as the government will gain significantly more power to combat the health and economic crises that are hitting the country hard.
The lower house of Congress passed the bill with a sharp division between the two major parties. 220 members of the House of Representatives voted for the law, and 211 voted against it.
The House of Representatives passed the bill exactly seven weeks after Biden took office as president and four days after it passed the Senate without a single Republican vote.
The House of Commons voted again on the bill today as the Senate passed an amended version on Saturday, removing or changing some provisions from the original text passed by the House of Representatives on February 26.
Biden is scheduled to sign the bill at the White House on Friday.
Opposition Republicans are criticizing the aid bill, saying it is full of liberal policies and ignores supposed signs that the health and economic crisis is abating.
Under the law, most American adults will receive up to $1.400 in direct benefits this year, and unemployment benefits of $300 a week will be extended until early September.
The bill provides hundreds of billions of dollars for coronavirus vaccines and treatment, for schools, local and federal governments, and hard-hit industries, from airlines to concert halls.
