A man armed with a knife tried to injure the interim president of Mali Asimi Goita today during the celebration of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
Goita was not injured in the attack, in which, according to witnesses, a man armed with a gun also participated.
Witnesses stated that the knife attack took place after the prayer and sermon in the mosque, that the security quickly took the head of state to safety and that one person was injured.
In the central part of Mali, jihadists have carried out several attacks in the past few days.
Colonel Goita came to power in August 2020, ousting the democratically elected president of Mali.
Although he agreed to form a transitional government, headed by a civilian president and prime minister, Goita overthrew them on May 24 after they announced a government reshuffle without consulting him.
Goita became interim president in June, promising the return of a civilian government after elections in February 2022.
