The US Department of Justice has ordered the Treasury Department to provide Congress with data on how much former President Donald Trump paid in taxes, the Voice of America (VOA) reports today.
This ended the long legal battle between the Committee on Taxes in the House of Representatives of the Congress, which requested the documents, and the Secretariat for Finance, which refused to provide them.
Donald Trump, while he was president, claimed that he could not publish how much he paid in taxes, because the Tax Administration analyzes those documents, and the media announced that he had reduced the value of his property multiple times and that he paid several hundred dollars in taxes.
The Secretary of Finance in the Trump administration, Steven Mnuchin, refused to provide the documents to the House of Representatives because they are in the majority of Democrats, so he concluded that they are seeking information on Trump's taxes for political reasons.
A congressional committee sued the Treasury Department and sought Trump's tax records because of its investigation into the former president.
Don Johnson of the Justice Department, appointed during the Biden administration, has now ordered the Justice Department to provide Congress with data on Trump's taxes.
The former president's tax records have already been turned over to Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, who is leading the investigation.
Trump tried to prevent this and brought the issue to the Supreme Court, which rejected his request, according to VOA.
