The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs announced today the severance of diplomatic relations with neighboring Morocco due to the kingdom's "hostile actions" towards Algeria.
"Algeria has decided to end its diplomatic relations with Morocco as of today," Algerian Minister Ramtan Lamara said at a press conference.
Explaining the reasons for that decision, the minister said that "history has shown that the Kingdom of Morocco has never stopped carrying out hostile actions against Algeria."
He said Moroccan leaders are responsible for repeated crises, which have worsened, and behavior that has led "to conflict, instead of integration in the region" of the Maghreb.
Last Wednesday, the High Security Council, chaired by the country's president, Abdemadjid Tebun, decided to "review" relations with Morocco, accusing it of being involved in the deadly fires that devastated the north of the country.
"Morocco's continued hostile actions against Algeria require a review of relations between the two countries and the strengthening of security controls on the western border," the official Algerian statement said.
