Taiwan's President Cai Ing-wen said that she has confidence in the United States of America (USA) to defend the island from China.
"I have confidence in view of the long-term relations that bind us to the USA, as well as the support of the American people, Congress and the administration," said the president in an interview that was broadcast on Wednesday evening by CNN.
Military tensions between Taiwan and China are at their worst in more than 40 years, Taiwanese officials said earlier this month.
Taiwan says that it is an independent country and will defend its freedom and democracy.
China, however, considers Taiwan to be the most sensitive and important issue in its relations with the US and condemns, as it states, the "collusion" between Washington and Taipei.
