A former Turkish agent was sentenced today to 23 years and four months in prison for "espionage" and "belonging to a terrorist organization", the local Anadolu agency reported.
Enver Altajli (77), who has dual citizenship, Turkish and German, has been in prison near Ankara for more than four years.
He was arrested for alleged links to the movement of Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish preacher living in the US who Ankara accused of being behind the failed coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2016.
Altajli was sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison for "military and political espionage" and to ten years in prison for "belonging to an armed terrorist organization."
The prosecution accused him of being involved in the escape attempt of another detained former agent to the US.
Since 2016, more than 300.000 people have been arrested in the fight against the Gulen movement and nearly 3.000 people have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
