The number of dead in the eruption of the Indonesian volcano Semeru has risen from 22 to 34, the disaster management agency's director general announced today.
"According to the last balance, 34 were killed, and 17 are missing," he said.
The eruption occurred on Saturday when more than 10 villages were covered with ash and destroyed.
The last time Semeru volcano erupted was in January and there were no victims then.
Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are frequent.
The Southeast Asian archipelago includes more than 17.000 islands and more than 130 active volcanoes.
