The number of Americans who do not consider themselves religious is growing significantly, according to a Pew Research survey of four thousand respondents.
About 29 percent of American adults today are not affiliated with any religion, according to the results of a study released this week. 14 years ago, they were 16 percent, reports the France Presse agency.
In America, home to a powerful, right-wing political faction of Christians, the dominant religion is still Christianity. However, the number of believers is falling significantly, according to Pew's results. As many as 78 percent of American adults declared themselves Christians in 2007, and now it is 63 percent, reports Hina.
In 2007, Pew began to list those who do not consider themselves believers, so they are described as agnostics, atheists and "nothing definite", in the statistics.
More and more atheists and agnostics, especially among young people
Back then, there were five Christians for every person who declared themselves an agnostic or an atheist, while today there are only twice as many, the researchers emphasized. Pew did not give reasons for the trend, but it is consistent with the widespread abandonment of Christianity throughout the West, writes France Presse.
In 2019, the trend of increasing the number of agnostics or atheists was particularly pronounced among younger people, according to Pew. The research shows that the secular shift is greatest among Protestants, while among Catholics, the population has remained stable in recent years.
The survey was conducted on almost four thousand respondents between May and August of this year.
