The Omicron strain of the coronavirus has been confirmed in 106 countries so far, and the risk of a new variant causing worldwide concern remains very high, the World Health Organization announced.
Between Oct. 20 and Dec. 19, omicron was detected in 1,6 percent of sequenced samples, the WHO's weekly bulletin said.
The Delta strain still remains dominant in the world and is found in 96 percent of samples, reports the Agency.
The latest evidence indicates that the omicron variant is spreading more rapidly than the delta strain, and is spreading rapidly even in countries with a high degree of herd immunity, according to the WHO.
When it comes to the clinical picture of omicron and the severity of the disease it causes, data are still limited, it added.
