A doctor from Toronto, Aisha Katib, gave birth to a young woman from Uganda in early December on a Qatar Airways plane. In addition to Dr. Katib, there were two other medical workers on the plane - a nurse and a pediatrician from Doctors Without Borders (MSF), so the baby was born without any problems.
The surprise for the doctor was the mother's decision to name her little girl after her - Aisha.
On December 7, the plane took off from the Qatari Doha towards the Ugandan city of Entebbe, where Dr. Katib was traveling on vacation, writes the BBC.
"About an hour after takeoff, the flight attendant asked over the loudspeaker if there were any doctors or medical personnel on the plane," Katib told CTV News Toronto on Friday.
Katib, an assistant professor at the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Toronto, readily volunteered, so they sent her to the back of the plane, where the young woman was in labor, reports Hina.
A young migrant woman from Uganda was traveling home from Saudi Arabia, where her first child was due to be born, but the girl decided to give birth earlier than expected, at 35 weeks pregnant.
Thanks to the help of Dr. Katib, a healthy girl was born and was named after the doctor Aiša, to which Miracle (miracle) was added.
"When I got to the back of the plane and saw a crowd of people gathered around someone who needed help, I first thought it was a heart attack or something similar. But when I got closer, I saw a woman who had just given birth." said Dr. Katib.
The birth at an altitude of 10.500 meters took place on December 7, but Katib was too busy with work and treating patients infected with Covid in Toronto, so she shared the photos on social media only this Sunday.
