US and coalition forces bombed the Syrian city of Raqqa in the same way that Dresden was destroyed during World War II, according to Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry.
According to him, during the operation to liberate Raqqa, which was controlled by members of the Islamic State, thousands of civilians died, reports Tanjug.
"Raka suffered the fate of Dresden in 1945, which was obliterated in the British-American bombing," said Konashenkov.
"Washington, Paris and Berlin announce that they are investing millions of dollars and euros to restore peaceful life in Raqqa, but in reality, they want to hide the evidence of the barbaric bombing of Raqqa, which they 'liberated' from IS," says Konashenkov.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the US-led coalition, declared victory over Islamic State in Raqqa on Friday.
Talal Silo, spokesman and commander of the SDF, pointed out at the press conference that Raqqa has been "liberated from extremists" and that power has officially been handed over to the local council.
"We have defeated terrorism," Silo said.
The press conference was held at the city's sports stadium, which the extremists of the Islamic State had turned into a large prison where they held prisoners and tortured opponents.
Silo called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to help rebuild the city.
The Islamic State conquered Raqqa in January 2014 and turned that city into the epicenter of its rule.
