United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned on Wednesday that the problem of global security when it comes to food supply cannot be solved without the restoration of Ukrainian agricultural production and Russian production of food and fertilizers for the world market.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine further disrupted the financial market and raised commodity prices, potentially jeopardizing economic recovery after covid-19 in many countries.
"UN analysis shows that the war in Ukraine is only making things worse, triggering a three-dimensional crisis that is destroying global food, energy and financial supply systems for developing countries," Guterres told reporters during his first visit to the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
He added that there is no correct solution for global food supply security without the renewal of Ukrainian agricultural production, as well as Russian and Belarusian food and fertilizer production for the world market.
Guterres said the UN has requested an additional $351 million to help Nigeria, which in April was forced to buy emergency supplies of fertilizer from Canada due to Western sanctions against Russia.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned last month that Russia's invasion of Ukraine had caused a huge negative shock in sub-Saharan Africa, putting the most vulnerable groups at risk of starvation.
