Israel today issued a warning to citizens not to travel to Turkey due to fears of Iran's response to the recent killing of a colonel in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Colonel Sayad Hasan Hodai was shot by two well-known assailants on a motorcycle with a total of five bullets while he was in his car in front of his house in the center of Tehran.
He was allegedly involved in murders and kidnappings outside Iran, including attempts to attack Israelis.
"For several weeks now, and even longer since Iran blamed Israel for the death of a Revolutionary Guard officer last Sunday, there has been growing concern in the defense establishment about Iranian attempts to harm Israeli targets around the world," Israel's National Security Council said in a statement.
The announcement adds that the travel warning to Turkey is being intensified, and that this and other countries bordering Iran represent "a high level of risk for Israelis these days."
Security officials said the alert was issued because of "real threats to Israelis" in Turkey, but did not specify which ones.
The National Security Council said that "Israeli citizens must be vigilant and take the necessary precautions when traveling to one of these countries."
Israel has not officially commented on the killing of the colonel, but has reportedly increased the level of security in embassies and consulates around the world.
In November 2020, top nuclear scientist Mahsen Fakhrizadeh was killed in Iran.
