Today, the Executive Committee of UNESCO elected the French woman Audrey Azoulay as the new Director General of the United Nations agency, after she received more votes than the representative of Qatar, Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari.
Azule defeated Al-Kavari 30-28 in the final vote, having received more votes than Egypt's Mushira Katab in the intermediate vote earlier today.
Arab countries lobbied hard for a candidate from an Arab country to be elected as the new Director General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Audrey Azula's selection must be confirmed by UNESCO's General Assembly next month, but it is considered a formality.
Azule will be the second person from France to lead UNESCO, since René Mayo served as Director-General from 1961 to 1974.
