At least 18 people have died in floods that swept through northeastern India and Bangladesh, leaving millions of homes under water, authorities said today, AP reports.
In the Indian federal state of Assam, at least nine people have died in floods and another two million have been left without their homes, the state's Disaster Management Agency said.
The Brahmaputra, one of Asia's largest rivers, breached its earthen embankments and flooded over three thousand villages and farmlands in 28 of Assam's 33 districts.
According to reports, in Bangladesh, whose districts near the border with India were the hardest hit, nine people lost their lives as a result of a lightning strike on Friday, Tanjug reports.
Water levels in all major rivers are rising, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, which has about 130 rivers.
