A Nigerian senator and his wife have been accused of planning to kidnap a homeless child and take him to Great Britain in order to harvest his organs and transplant his kidney to their daughter.
Ike Ekweremadu, a politician from the Peoples Democratic Party, who previously held the position of Deputy Speaker of the National Senate, and Bitrik Ekweremadu have been accused of attempting to traffic the organs of a 15-year-old from Lagos and smuggle him into the United Kingdom.
The couple, who have four children, intended to transplant the boy's organs to their daughter, who suffers from kidney failure.
They were arrested two days ago while trying to board a flight to Turkey from London, where they had spent the previous two weeks due to diplomatic duties. writes Nova.rs.
Ekweremadu (60) had more than 20.000 euros with him at the time of his arrest. After his arrest, he denied allegations of human or organ trafficking.
"He said he did not arrange transport for anyone with the intention of taking advantage of him," the police told the Daily Mail.
His wife similarly denied the allegations. However, they were kept in custody and will be brought to court next month. The boy has been taken over by the authorities and he will be transported to Nigeria.
In this case too, the public was shocked by the fact that Ekweremadu held the position of senator in the Abuja-based parliament since 2003, when he entered politics after a long career as a lawyer.
His wife, who is five years younger, is also an academic citizen and a doctor, and is considered one of the most respected people in Nigeria.
Slavery common in Nigeria
By the way, this kind of exploitation of the poor life situations by the rich, and in the worst case, enslaving them, is common in Nigeria. This was also confirmed by Femi Fani-Kajode, a former minister of the Nigerian government who claimed in 2017 that the organs of migrants from his country were removed after they were sold into slavery.
He also said that 75 percent of the slaves whose organs were removed in North Africa were from his country.
The lawyer from Cambridge University added that victims often end up with disfigured bodies or with burns.
"They are being roasted alive! This is what Libyans do to sub-Saharan Africans who just want to reach Europe. They are sold into slavery, killed, maimed, tortured or forced to work to death," said the lawyer.
