The covid-19 pandemic is "far from over", said today the Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"When the virus makes a breakthrough, we need to suppress it. The Covid-19 pandemic is far from over," said the head of the WHO at a press conference in Geneva.
As the number of hospitalizations and transmission of Covid-19 increases, governments should implement tried and tested measures such as mask wearing, improved ventilation, testing and treatment protocols, he added.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the publication of the results of the last meeting of the WHO Emergency Committee for Covid-19, held last Friday.
WHO announced that the covid-19 pandemic remains at the level of "public health emergency of international concern", which is the organization's highest level of alert, based on the unanimous decision of the Committee.
The committee pointed to the decline in the number of people tested and genomic testing, which, as stated, makes it increasingly difficult to assess the impact of covid-19 strains, and indicated that "current surveillance of the pandemic is inadequate."
The Committee pointed to the recent increase in the number of cases of covid-19 in various areas of the world and the lack of implementation of adapted public health measures in areas affected by the resurgence of cases.
