Azerbaijani authorities said tonight that 50 of their soldiers had been killed in clashes with Armenian forces on the border with Armenia in the heaviest fighting since the two countries' war in 2022.
Previously, Armenia announced that 49 Armenian soldiers were killed in the fighting between the two sides that broke out during the night.
"Fifty Azerbaijani soldiers were killed after a major Armenian provocation," the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense announced.
Azerbaijan previously admitted it had "losses" without specifying the number.
Armenia concluded a peace agreement with Azerbaijan in November 2020 with the mediation of Russia, after the defeat of Armenian forces in the six-week war over Nagorno-Karabakh, in which more than 6.500 people died.
With that agreement, Armenia lost control over part of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas in Azerbaijan after more than 25 years.
Russia announced today that it mediated the negotiations and that Azerbaijan and Armenia reached an agreement on a ceasefire, expressing the hope that the agreement will be respected.
