At least 135 Armenian soldiers were killed this Sunday in the worst border clashes with Azerbaijan since the 2020 war, according to a new casualty tally announced today by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
"At this moment, the death toll is 135. Unfortunately, this is not the final figure," Pashinyan said at the government meeting.
He added that there were also a large number of wounded.
The number of victims on both sides is more than 200.
New clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces broke out last week in Nagorno-Karabakh, formally a territory of Azerbaijan most of which is controlled by ethnic Armenians, supported by the government in Yerevan.
Armenia concluded a peace agreement with Azerbaijan in November 2020 with the mediation of Russia, after the defeat of Armenian forces in the six-week war over Nagorno-Karabakh, in which more than 6.500 people died.
With that agreement, Armenia lost control over part of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas in Azerbaijan.
