Hackers from Russia are behind a cyber attack on Medibank, Australia's largest private health insurer, the Australian Federal Police said.
That attack, according to Reuters, endangered slightly less than 10 million current and former Medibank customers.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Rhys Kershaw blamed the attack on Medibank on a loosely connected group of cybercriminals who were likely responsible for other major attacks around the world.
Kershaw said the AFP knew which individuals were responsible for the attacks, but would not name them at this time.
"When it comes to these criminals, we also have significant results in negotiations when it comes to their return from overseas to Australia to face the justice system," he said at a short press conference.
Kershaw added that the AFP would hold talks with Russian law enforcement.
The Russian embassy did not immediately respond to questions about whether it had been in communication with the Australian government about the hack.
