Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said yesterday that it is too early to say whether she will try to keep her position after the uncertain outcome of the election results held on Tuesday, but stressed that she has no plans to retire from political life.
In several television interviews, Pelosi said that her Democratic Party will have a "much brighter future" in the next session of Congress, given the weaker-than-expected Republican results. Pelosi, 82, said she is focused on her party's future, not her own, ahead of a Nov. 30 House leadership vote.
"There are different ways to have influence. The position of Speaker of the House carries a lot of power, but I will always have influence," she told CNN.
Democrats have secured control of the Senate, while control of the House of Representatives remains uncertain as both parties have yet to win 218 seats as counting continues. "It's tight," Pelosi said. "We haven't given up yet. They haven't won yet".
When asked if the recent attack on her husband will affect the decision about her political future, Pelosi said she has no plans to leave Congress and will try to contribute to the advancement of her party. She also said that she will support Biden if he wants to run for re-election.
"My decision will be based on the wishes of my family and my constituents. But none of that will be considered until we see the outcome of all of this," she told CNN.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said he plans to run for president if his party wins a majority.
