A former student killed three people and wounded 13 with a semi-automatic pistol when he stormed two schools in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo, after which he was arrested, the state secretariat for public security said.
The attacks took place in the small town of Aracruz, which is located about 80 kilometers north of the capital of Vitoria, reports Reuters.
An unidentified teenager wearing military clothing attacked two schools, one private and the other public.
He is currently being sought, officials said.
The local police said that they suspect that the killer is a student of one of the attacked schools, but the head of public security of Espirito Santa Marcio Selante told reporters that this has not been confirmed.
One of the injured persons was transferred by helicopter to Serra, a larger town located about 60 kilometers south of Aracruz.
The governor of the area, Espirito Santoa Renato Casagrande, sent his condolences to the families of the victims and said that all local forces are engaged in the investigation.
The newly elected president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also spoke about the attack, saying that it was an "absurd tragedy".
"I offer support to Governor Casagrande in the investigation of the case and comfort to the communities surrounding the two affected schools," Lula said.
