At least 90 percent of the world's population has some form of immunity to the coronavirus, said the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, but he warned about the reduced vigilance of the population towards the virus.
"That decline in vigilance leaves the door open for the emergence of a new variant that is likely to spread and replace the currently dominant omicron variant," Gebrejesus said at a news conference.
According to him, at least 90 percent of the world's population currently has some form of immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, either through a previous illness or vaccination.
Gebrejesus said that it is too early to say that the coronavirus pandemic is over. "We haven't reached the end yet," he said.
"The lack of surveillance, testing and vaccination continues to create the perfect conditions for the emergence of a worrying new variant that could cause a high death rate," the WHO chief warned.
