Voters in the US state of Georgia are voting in the last election of the year for a seat in the Senate, the outcome of which could not threaten the Democratic Party's control of the upper house of the US Congress.
Democratic Party Senator Rafael Warnock and Republican Party candidate Herschel Walker, a former American football player, are fighting for the last seat in the Senate, since none of the candidates won 8 percent of the votes in the first round on November 50.
If Walker wins, both Democrats and Republicans will each have 50 members of the Senate, but the Democratic Party of President Joseph Biden will retain control, since in the event of a tie, the vote of US Vice President Kamala Harris, who presides over the upper house of Congress, will decide.
In the case of Warnock's victory, the Democrats will have a clear majority, that is, 51 senators against 49 Republicans. However, to pass most of the legislation, they will still need the support of Republicans who took control of the lower house of Congress in the Nov. 8 election.
Today's race is considered the last test of the influence of former US President Donald Trump, who has announced that he will try to win the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election.
Walker is one of the many candidates in the US Congress elections, held on November 8, that Trump supported. The candidates supported by Trump achieved different results, but generally worse than expected.
Warnock, a Democrat, is a pastor at the Atlanta church where civil rights activist Martin Luther King once preached. Walker accuses Warnock of supporting policies that have led to rising inflation.
Walker's campaign has been dogged by a series of allegations, including claims by his ex-girlfriends that he encouraged them to have abortions, even though he has publicly advocated making abortion illegal. Walker denies the claims, as well as allegations of domestic violence by ex-girlfriends.
In the first round of the election, Warnock received 49,44 percent and Walker 48,49 percent of the vote, while other Republican candidates in Georgia won convincingly, including the governor of that state, Brian Kemp.
