In the province of Zhejiang in eastern China, about one million new cases of coronavirus are recorded daily, and the number is expected to double in the coming days, the provincial government announced today.
Despite a record rise in the number of infected people across the country, China has not reported any deaths from covid-19 in the past five days, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today.
As Reuters reports, citizens and experts are looking for more accurate data on the state of the country as the numbers have risen sharply after the authorities abandoned the "zero covid" strategy.
The data is incomplete because the National Health Commission stopped reporting asymptomatic cases.
Today, the commission stopped reporting the daily numbers, which were then released by the CDC.
Zhejiang is among the few areas that also record asymptomatic cases.
"It is estimated that the peak of the infection will arrive earlier in Zhejiang and that it will enter a period of elevated levels around the New Year, during which the number of new infections on a daily basis will reach two million," the Zhejiang government said in a statement.
