The newly formed Republican majority in the US House of Representatives opened a long-promised investigation into US President Joseph Biden and his family.
Republicans in the lower house of Congress now have four more seats than Democrats, so they can ask the US Treasury Department and former Twitter officials for information in preparation for public hearings.
"Now that Democrats don't have one-party control in Washington, oversight and accountability are coming," said Republican Congressman James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee.
This committee sent a series of letters to the Treasury Department requesting information regarding the financial transactions of the Biden family that could be considered suspicious activity.
Republican congressmen are also seeking testimony from multiple Twitter officials involved in the company's handling of an October 2020 New York Post tabloid story about Hunter Biden, the president's younger son.
Republicans claim that the spread of the story was suppressed for political reasons.
By acting so quickly after taking control of the House of Representatives, Republicans are setting themselves up for a chaotic, politically explosive showdown with the White House ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
The Treasury Department declined to comment on the Republicans' request.
