At least 15 soldiers were killed and three were injured in a fire in a barracks in the east of Armenia, the Ministry of Defense announced today.
The ministry stated that three injured soldiers are in serious condition.
The fire broke out around 1.30:23.30 this morning local time (XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. CET) in the village of Azat in the eastern region of Gegharkunik. The cause has not yet been determined.
The Caucasian country of around three million people is still reeling from a heavy defeat in a 2020 conflict with neighboring Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the ensuing political crisis.
Although the major fighting over that area has ended, there are still tensions between the two countries over the border.
