An earthquake measuring 7,8 on the Richter scale struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, killing thousands of people. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams search for survivors in the rubble of collapsed buildings.

— May 27, 2006: More than 7.500 people are killed when a magnitude 6,3 earthquake hits the Indonesian island of Java.
