Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that the poisoning of Iranian schoolgirls in recent months is an unforgivable crime, reports Reuters.
More than 1.000 Iranian students, mostly female students, fell ill in the past three months in waves of poisoning, possibly from toxic gas, the BBC reported.
Dozens of girls in at least 26 schools across the country reportedly fell ill on Wednesday, in an apparent escalation of cases.
"The authorities should seriously deal with the issue of poisoning students. This is an unforgivable crime... The perpetrators of this crime should be severely punished," said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Day after day, it is repeated that female schoolgirls smell "unpleasant" or "unfamiliar" smells, and then have nausea, shortness of breath and dizziness. Some of them were in the hospital for a short time, but none of them have been seriously affected so far.
