Last year, Ukraine was the third largest arms importer in the world, after Qatar and India, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute announced today.
That institution stated that since Ukraine gained independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it imported small amounts of heavy weapons until the end of 2021, which changed after Russia's attack on that country.
The total arms trade in the world decreased last year, but it increased sharply in Europe, due to the tension between Moscow and most European countries, which after the Russian invasion of Ukraine want to import more weapons, reports N1.
For the past three decades, the largest arms exporters were the United States and Russia, according to AP.
It can be expected that the attack on Ukraine will affect the reduction of Russian arms exports, due to the need to supply its own army and trade sanctions against Moscow.
Washington is responsible for 40 percent of world arms exports, Moscow for 16 percent, while France reached 11 percent.
