The first sanctioned protest against a proposed land reclamation and waste processing project was held in Hong Kong today since the government passed the General Security Act 2020 during the pandemic.
Dozens of people marched against the implementation of that project in the eastern part of the newly built city of Seung Kwan O, where its implementation is planned.
The march was held with numerous restrictions that the demonstrators were not satisfied with because, as they told Reuters, they did not have enough freedom, which is why only 50 people participated in the protest out of 100 allowed.
Hong Kong police said the rules are necessary to ensure national security and prevent violence.
Their Development Bureau said that they will respect the freedom of expression of citizens and will reduce the scope of the land earmarked for restoration.
Hong Kong's Basic Law guarantees citizens the right to public assembly, although in 2020 China introduced the National Security Law when authorities suppressed citizens' freedom and arrested certain politicians and activists.
