Sweden has sent around 150 soldiers to evacuate its diplomats and citizens from Sudan, with the permission of parliament to use force if necessary, the country's defense ministry said today.
"The Swedish army has deployed in the region," Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonsson's cabinet announced to AFP.
Between 140 and 150 soldiers were mobilized, although the text that was urgently adopted today in the parliament allows for up to 400 soldiers, the ministry said.
Swedish authorities, however, refused to say whether the operation had begun or was ongoing, citing "operational secrecy".
Several countries today began operations to repatriate their nationals from Sudan, where war between the army and paramilitary groups has been raging for more than a week.
Sweden announced on Friday that it wanted to evacuate around 100 of its citizens, but indicated at the time that security conditions had not been met.
Mobilized soldiers will be able to use force if necessary to evacuate diplomatic personnel and their families, the ministry's statement added.
